Importing from Spreadsheets, Intune, or Jamf
Most teams that come to AssetCompass have an existing inventory somewhere — a shared spreadsheet, a device management tool, or a folder full of purchase receipts nobody's touched since 2022. The CSV import is how you get all of that in without spending an afternoon clicking "New Asset."
The Quickest Path: Use the Template
The easiest way to import is to start from AssetCompass's own CSV template. Download it from the Assets page (look for the Import button), fill in your data, and upload it back. The columns are already named correctly so nothing gets mismatched.
If you already have a spreadsheet, you'll need to map your column names to ours. The table below shows what we're looking for:
| Column | Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
name | Yes | A human-readable label for the asset. "John's MacBook Pro" works fine. |
manufacturer | No | Apple, Dell, Lenovo, etc. |
model | No | MacBook Pro 14", Latitude 5540, etc. |
serial_number | No | Unique per device. Duplicates during import will be flagged. |
asset_tag | No | If blank, one is auto-generated using your org's tag settings. |
status | No | Must match a valid status name exactly. Defaults to "Active" if blank. |
condition | No | New, Good, Fair, or Poor. |
assigned_to | No | Full name of the assignee. Created automatically if they don't exist yet. |
location | No | Must match an existing location name exactly (case-insensitive). |
department | No | Created automatically if it doesn't exist. |
purchase_cost | No | Number only, no currency symbol. "1299.99" not "$1,299.99". |
purchase_date | No | ISO format: YYYY-MM-DD. "2024-03-15" not "March 15, 2024". |
warranty_expiry | No | ISO format: YYYY-MM-DD. Drives warranty expiry alerts on the dashboard. |
notes | No | Free text. Good place for anything that doesn't fit elsewhere. |
Importing from Microsoft Intune
Intune doesn't have a one-click "export to AssetCompass" button (yet), but its built-in reports get you most of the way there.
- In the Intune admin center, go to Devices → All Devices
- Click Export (top right). Intune exports a CSV with device name, OS, manufacturer, model, serial number, and enrolled user.
- Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets and rename the columns to match the AssetCompass format above. Key mappings: "Device name" →
name, "Serial number" →serial_number, "Primary user UPN" →assigned_to. - Delete columns AssetCompass doesn't need, clean up any blank rows, and import.
Intune won't have purchase cost or warranty data — you'll need to add those manually or via another import pass from your procurement records.
Importing from Jamf Pro
Jamf's reporting is more flexible. The fastest export path:
- Go to Reports → Advanced Computer Searches (or Smart Groups if you have them configured)
- Run a search with the fields you want: Computer Name, Serial Number, Make, Model, Assigned User, Purchase Price, Purchase Date, Warranty Expiration.
- Click Export → CSV.
- Rename columns to match the AssetCompass format and import.
Jamf's "Assigned User" is usually a username, not a full name — you may want to clean that up before importing so people records look right in AssetCompass.
Common Import Problems (and Fixes)
- Duplicate serial numbers — the importer will flag these. Check if you have the same device listed twice, or if the serial belongs to an asset already in your org.
- Status values not recognized — status names must match exactly. "active" works, "Active" works, "ACTIVE" works. "In Use" doesn't — use "Active" instead.
- Location not found — the importer matches locations by name. If the location in your CSV doesn't match one that already exists in AssetCompass, it'll be left blank. Add your locations first, then import.
- Purchase cost formatted as currency — strip the dollar signs and commas. "1,299.00" will fail; "1299.00" will work.
- Dates in wrong format — use YYYY-MM-DD. If your spreadsheet has dates as "4/2/2024" or "April 2, 2024," reformat the column before importing. In Excel: format the column as "YYYY-MM-DD" or use TEXT(A1,"YYYY-MM-DD").
