Looking for a Freshservice ITAM Alternative? You're Probably Paying for a Help Desk You Don't Need.
Published
Freshservice is a solid ITSM platform. Incident management, service catalog, change management, and — somewhere in the bundle — an IT asset management module. The problem isn't quality. It's scope.
If you came to Freshservice because you needed to track laptops, you ended up buying a help desk, a change management system, a service catalog, and a project management tool. The ITAM module is good. It's also buried inside a platform that's doing five other things, and you're paying for all of them.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Here's why smaller IT teams are looking for something more focused.
What Freshservice Does Well
- Full ITSM suite — ticketing, incidents, changes, releases, and a service catalog in one platform
- Asset discovery with an agent and agentless options
- Contract and license management
- Solid automation engine for ticket routing and approval workflows
- Clean UI relative to the ITSM category — Freshworks generally builds good-looking software
If you need a full ITSM platform and want ITAM included in the bundle, Freshservice is a legitimate option — especially compared to ServiceNow's pricing.
Where the Bundle Becomes the Problem
Freshservice's pricing starts at $29/agent/month for the Starter tier, but the ITAM features that matter — asset discovery, contract management, software license tracking — live on the Growth tier at $59/agent/month or higher. For a 5-person IT team, that's $295/month at minimum just to get to the ITAM features you actually wanted. And that's before you add the discovery probe or any of the add-ons.
The per-agent model also creates an awkward dynamic: the people who need to look up assets — HR checking if a departing employee returned their laptop, Finance pulling depreciation numbers — aren't "agents" in the ITSM sense. So either you buy them seats they'll barely use, or they Slack you every time they need a number. Neither option is great.
There's also the complexity tax. Freshservice is designed around ITIL processes. If your team runs ITIL, that's a feature. If your team is three people who need to track hardware and don't have time for change advisory boards, it's overhead that slows you down without adding value.
ITSM-First vs. Asset-First
The core issue is architectural. Freshservice is a help desk that added asset management. The asset module serves the ticketing system, not the other way around.
That means the asset record is optimized for linking to tickets, not for answering the questions an IT admin or CFO actually asks: "What do we own? Who has it? What's it worth? When do the warranties expire? What happened to the devices we retired last quarter?" You can get those answers out of Freshservice, but it's often more work than it should be because the data model wasn't built around those questions.
If your primary use case is service management and you want ITAM as a side benefit, Freshservice is a reasonable choice. If your primary use case is asset management and you don't need a ticketing system, you're paying for a tool whose center of gravity is somewhere else.
What to Look for in an Alternative
- Asset-first data model — the asset record is the center of the product, not an appendage to a ticket
- Pricing based on assets or flat rate, not per-agent — so Finance and HR can look things up without a seat license
- Lifecycle tracking from procurement through disposal without configuring an ITIL workflow
- Simple onboarding — if you need a week of setup and a Freshworks consultant to go live, the tool is too heavy
- Reporting that non-IT stakeholders can pull without training
assetcompass
assetcompass is built for IT teams at companies with 50 to 500 employees who need asset management without the ITSM wrapper. No ticketing system, no service catalog, no change advisory board. Just the asset lifecycle, tracked cleanly.
- Track assets by serial number through their full lifecycle: deployed, in inventory, in repair, disposed
- Assignment history with timestamps — who had what and when
- Employee offboarding workflow — per-asset disposition (return, buyback, or lost) tracked automatically
- QR code labels — generate and bulk-print labels, scan to pull up asset details
- AI receipt scanning — photo or PDF in, asset details out
- Prioritized action queue: expiring warranties, pending returns, devices needing setup
- Disposal tracking including employee buybacks, donations, recycling, and destruction
- Monthly and quarterly export reports for Finance and compliance
- Starter plan at $29/month (up to 100 assets, 3 users), Pro at $79/month (unlimited)
- 30-day free trial, no credit card required
At $79/month for unlimited assets and users, you're paying less than two Freshservice Growth seats — and everyone on your team can access it, not just the agents.
